Crack cocaine treatment remains a desperate need for as many as a million afflicted people. One use of the drug can make an addict out of a person who thought to try it on a recreational basis. Most dangerous, crack is inexpensive, and therefore in a position to poison the lives of those who are most vulnerable. The crack wars of the ’80s have passed but the need for crack addiction rehabilitation endures.

Source

The ultimate source of all forms of cocaine is the humble cocoa leaf of South America. The Indians chewed the leaf as a stimulant, as mild to them as coffee might be to us. It was processed into cocaine in 1959 and has been sniffed by its users since then. It remained primarily a plaything of wealthier people till the 1980s. Then drug dealers discovered how to make cocaine into a crystalline form to be ingested through smoking without risking fire or explosions in the process.

Effects

The user smokes the drug and then feels its powerful effect in just eight to ten seconds. It creates a huge dopamine rush, bringing the characteristic intense feeling of elation. The user feels he or she has escaped all mundane problems. This feeling, however, is exceptionally short-lived, lasting only about ten minutes. The elation is followed by a significant crash, making the user almost desperate to return to the elation.

Responsibility Rejection

That elation is just a few dollars away, which creates a nearly irresistible temptation for another hit. So begins an intense cycle in which the user is as desperate to remain high as a poor swimmer might be to tread water. During this period, the user is uniquely indifferent to anything except getting more of the drug into their bodies. Anything, including the care of the user’s own children, might be neglected. Addicts are willing to sell all their belongings, even sell themselves into prostitution, in order to keep abusing the drug.

Physical Symptoms

Aside from these “lifestyle effects” are a long list of obvious physical symptoms. These begin with the dilated pupils of someone under the influence. Users are prone to seizures, auditory hallucinations, and stroke. They might have difficulty breathing, and their lungs might collapse. Their heartbeats can become irregular, and they might suffer heart attacks. Sudden death can come from several directions.

Treatment

Treatment begins with detoxification, which takes place on an inpatient basis in a controlled environment such as a hospital. Withdrawal from any cocaine addiction can continue for several days to a week, and is indicated by craving the drug, irritability, sleep problems and loss of appetite. The patient may be administered propranolol to ease the withdrawal and vigabatrin to treat seizures.

Psychological Help

Once medical drug detox is finished, the patient’s psychological issues need to be addressed. Milder cases can be addressed through outpatient counseling. However, those that are more problematic or who have suffered physical damage particularly to the brain, must have their care as inpatients. Once this process is finished, they’ll be placed into a group home with other recovering patients, all under a therapist’s care.

These days it is possible to drive a Ferrari (and lots of other outstanding supercars) at professional motor racing tracks all over Spain. Strong racing traditions and excellent locations make el Jarama in Madrid and The Circuit of Cataluña near Barcelona popular choices among the circuits. But there are plenty of other choices out there as well that are well worth investigating, as you will see in this article!

Montmeló

Without doubt, the most famous circuit in all of Spain is Montmeló. It has held the Spanish Grand Prix since 1991 and recently has become popular as a winter testing ground for F1 teams.

Drivers will be faced with unique challenges such as difficult breaking sections, an exciting mixture of fast and slow corners, as well as a variety of slopes and inclines.

To get the full experience of driving at a top level circuit and to follow the footsteps of some of Formula One's greatest names, then Montmeló is definitely the ideal choice.

The Circuit of El Jarama

The circuit at Jarama near Madrid also has a notable motor racing history. It has held the Spanish Gran Prix on eleven occasions between 1967 and 1981. Icons of F1 racing history such as Nicki Lauda and Gilles Villenueve have all taken the checkered flag here. With its varied elevations and tight twisting corners, Jarama is one of the most challenging racing tracks in Spain.

In Spanish motor racing, the names 'Rampa Pegaso' and 'Bajada Bugati' are legendary and you can experience them for yourself at Jarama. The circuit will require a lot of steel, commitment, and (obviously!) skill.

Circuit of Cheste

This circuit was named after one of Valencia's most notable racing sons, motorcycling legend Ricardo Tormo. Cheste is a quick, exciting and memorable circuit and its mild winter temperature also makes it a favored testing venue for Formula 1 teams.

There is a good balance of fast and slow curves as well as an enjoyable straight of 876 meters.. It is also famed for being one of the a small number of anticlockwise racing tracks in Spain. An intensive, challenging drive is assured!

The circuit at Navarra.

The newest track in Spain is the circuit of Navarra near Los Arcos, having opened in 2010. It has already hosted some top quality events such as the Super League Formula. It boasts all the amenities you would hope to find at a modern circuit.

The track consists of 13 corners (five left and eight right) and its 800m straight provides plenty of opportunity to put the pedal to the floow!

The circuit at Kotarr

Opened in 2008, the circuit at Kotarr can adopt a variety of layouts, based on the vehicles involved and type of event that is being held. One other notable characteristic is that Kotarr is the only Spanish racing track where it is possible to drive in icy, wet conditions.

The track in its longest version contains a fine blend of fifteen fast and slow corners and a layout allowing for fun and intense racing. There are a number of challenging curves and long straights, prefect for putting the pedal to the metal.

The circuit at Jerez.

The ciruit of Jerez played host to the Spanish Grand Prix between 1986 and 1990 and as such, is yet another racing track with a fine heritage. It first opened its doors in 1985 and since then has developed a reputation as one of the top and fastest paced tracks in Spain.

With challenging corners such as the famous Sito Pons or Alex Crivillé, you'll need plenty of nerve to navigate this wide and super quick track. What's more, the track is relatively flat and doesn't contain any blind corners, which makes it one of the racers’ favorites.

So next time you are on vacation in sunny Spain and are looking for something different and fun to do at the weekend, why not book a couple of laps in the car of your dreams? Your own personal Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche or even authentic F1 car can be booked with any one of many established online companies.

So why hang around? Select which car you want to drive and the circuit that you want to drive at, and we will be ready for you at the pit stop!

The article author happens to be a life-long Ferrari addict and motorsports fanatic, and has a deep passion for driving experiences. If you'd love the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the car of your dreams at an authentic, top class Spanish speed circuit, such as the Circuit de Catalunya, then you can find additional tips and advice on his website www.conducirunferrari.es.

We were recently asked by our friends at HostelBookers.com to participate in a fun travel photo meme that showcases 7 of our photos that fall within the categories below.

We had fun putting together our Best of Travel in 2011 and Travels & Adventures from A to Z a few weeks ago, so we jumped on the opportunity to share some of our travel photos (all we need is an excuse!).

To follow along on twitter, check out the hashtag #7SuperShots

1. A photo that…takes our breath away

Machu Picchu, Peru

It’s difficult to accurately describe the feelings and emotion that we felt when we crossed over the Sun Gate and witnessed the magic of Machu Picchu for the very first time. We had just finished 3 days of hiking the Inca Trail, we were exhausted and damp from the morning rain. Months of planning, preparation and anticipation came to fruition as the clouds began to part over this treasured lost city. Our dream had finally become a reality.

This moment did much more than take our breath away – it taught us that dreams are meant to be chased, fulfilled and celebrated!

2. A photo that…makes us laugh or smile

If you’ve been following our blog for a while you know Japan is one of our favourite countries. We love the quirky and bizarre oddities that can be found throughout the country.

Case in point – this statue in front of a restaurant in Kyoto. Now, is it really necessary to show the boy’s penis? And why are there two completely different baby dogs positioned under this attacking dog? What does any of this have to do with dining at a restaurant?

Nevertheless, we had a good laugh and felt it was photo worthy.

3. A photo that…makes us dream

 Easter Island Maoi Statues

We had always dreamed of one day sitting in the presence of the mysterious Moai statues of Easter Island. We captured this fiery sunset and collection of Moai statues just outside the town of Hanga Roa.

To this day, we still get a slight chill down our spines when we look back at our photos. We know that we were once there, walking amongst these peculiar works of art. Although the images will forever be burned in our minds, at times we still feel like it was all just a dream.

4. A photo that…makes us think

This photo paints a chilling picture of life at the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The high school was converted into a horrifying prison shortly after the Khmer Rouge communist regime came into power in 1975. An estimated 17,000 people were unjustly imprisoned at Tuol Sleng, most victims were tortured and killed.

This photo makes us think and it makes us very sad. But it’s also a reminder to the world that we must do everything in our power to prevent such terrible atrocities from repeating.

5. A photo that…makes our mouth water

Turkey is a foodies dream destination. Virtually every mega-city in the world has restaurants that serve Turkish cuisine, but few can compete with the food that is served in Turkey – often imitated, never duplicated!

This tasty doner kebab and cold Efes beer was enjoyed in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey and final resting place of Father Turkey. Mmmm…is it lunch time yet?!

6. A photo that…tells a story

This photo is supposed to do the storytelling, but here is some background info to help – Peru, Lake Titicaca, floating reed islands, tourism, cute children selling local crafts, money, boredom.

7. A photo that…we are most proud of (aka my National Geographic shot)

Canadian Rockies in Alberta

Wow – there’s a lot of pressure that comes with this category!

We bounced around dozens of photos that were all worthy of such a title (like this one or this one), but this photo stood out because it’s the kind of photo we would expect to see in National Geographic.

We felt that a “National Geographic photo” needed to include nature and it needed to be a landscape that was “out of this world beautiful”. We think this photo satisfies both prerequisites.

It is a universal requirement that a traveler crossing borders into another country have valid travel documents. In the US, passport renewal is done for those who have one that they obtained at the age of 18 years and above. If it expired more than 5 years, a new one will have to be applied for. Sometimes, one may need to travel as a matter of emergency and they may not have the time to wait for their travel document to be renewed in the amount of time is usually takes. In such cases, expedited American passport renewal services are necessary.

Expedition

One can do this in one of three ways. The first is to make an application by mail and the other is to make an application at the passport agencies that are in every region. The third alternative is to engage the services of a private expediter. You can get USA passport pages faster too.

Postal Service

For the mail application, one needs to send in the requirements by mail. This includes photos, a completed Form DS-82, the expired document and the required payment. This is send in a padded envelope on which the word expedite should clearly be marked.

Location

The application should be sent by overnight express to reach the national processing center the next day. It then takes two to three weeks to get renewal done. Sometimes, it may take longer if the office is busy at the time you apply such as during holiday seasons which is peak travel period.

Travel Seasons

The service is automated and is therefore on every day of the week for 24 hours. During peak travel seasons like around holidays, it can be difficult to get through. Once one is given an appointment, one goes with a Form DS-82 that has been duly completed, passport to be renewed, photos and the required fee. The renewed one will usually be ready in two weeks. The locations, contacts and requirements can all be found on online directories.

Automatic Service

Depending on circumstances, the document may be needed within a much shorter time like a few days or even one or two. The best option then becomes going to a private expediter. Most of them also offer visa expediting services. This is also a handy option for those who are not near a regional agency. Once it is processed, the expediter mails it to the client.

Private Company

With this expedition option, the process can be accelerated so that the document is available in a few days or even the next day. The shorter the processing time one requests, the higher the fee. It is however worth the extra cost in emergencies.

Memorable Moments Drinking Beer around the World

Well, it’s about that time again! Time for 2012′s first installment of our popular series about memorable moments drinking beer around the world.

As lovers of beer and travel, we try our best to take a photo of every beer that we sample while on the road, making for an awesome photo collection with over 300 different types and brands of beer.

Because tastes and preferences are so subjective, our goal for this series is not to find the “best beer in the world”, but rather to reflect on memorable beer drinking moments from our travels. Keep in mind, we don’t consider ourselves professional beer connoisseurs and our beer reviews can easily be influenced by how many were consumed that day.

The beer-tastic series continues with its 11th edition, serving up ten more unforgettable moments from around the world. Cheers!

~~~~~~~~
Belikin Beer - Placencia, Belize
Belikin Beer – Placencia, Belize
This tropical beer drinking moment comes from the lazy beaches of Placencia, a small Belizean town located on the Caribbean coast of Central America. We spent many hours soaking up the laid back atmosphere at the open-aired restaurant of Paradise Vacation Hotel, our home for a few days while we searched for whale sharks in the Belize Barrier Reef.
The beer verdict – Crisp and refreshing, heavily carbonated with limited flavour. The bottles are way to small and deceivingly heavy. We give it a generous 7 out of 10
~~~~~~~~

Kingfisher Draught – Mumbai, India

These frosty mugs of beer were enjoyed at the legendary Leopold Cafe on Colaba Causeway, in the Fort area of Mumbai. The restaurant and bar has been popular with foreigners, expats and tourists for years, however it has recently become somewhat of a landmark for unfortunate reasons. It was one of the first spots to be attacked during the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks – a very dark day for humanity.

The beer verdict – Malty and bitter with skunky aftertaste, heavily carbonated but refreshing in India’s stinking humidity. We give India’s flagship beer 6 out of 10

~~~~~~~~
Pilsen Callao - Puno, Peru
Pilsen Callao – Lake Titicaca, Peru
We enjoyed these tall bottles of Pilsen Callao after spending the day touring the islands of Lake Titicaca, including a stop at the floating reed islands. This was also the night we tried Cuy Chactado, a popular Peruvian dish that is basically a fried guinea pig. It was an interesting meal, but we were happy to have these beers to wash it down (what can I say – we’re just not big fans of eating greasy rodents).
The beer verdict – Sweet, tangy, somewhat flat. South America beer just isn’t very good. We give it 5.5 out of 10
~~~~~~~~

Macau Beer Blond Ale – Macau, China

Often labeled as the “Las Vegas of the East”, Macau is a dazzling metropolis that tickles your senses. Enormous casinos sparkle beside colonial Portuguese architecture and traditional Chinese temples. We sampled this blonde ale in a swanky casino restaurant that was clearly out of our league, but it was fun to mingle with the high rollers and Chinese elite (even if they were looking at us kind of funny).

The beer verdict – Light gold colour, quite hoppy for a blonde ale but decent body. It was nice to sample a local beer amongst the sea of European and American imports. We give it 7 out of 10

~~~~~~~~
Whistler Beer - Granville Island, BC
Black Tusk Ale, Whistler Brewing Company – Vancouver, Canada
British Columbia has slowly become a player in the beer scene, with several micro-breweries and craft beer manufacturers scattered throughout the province. We enjoyed this tasty bottle of brown ale aboard a harbour boat cruise around English Bay, along with several of our travel blogger friends that were visiting Vancouver for the Travel Blogger Exchange (TBEX) conference in June.
The beer verdict – Caramel malt with light nuttiness, smooth with good body. We give it 7 out of 10
~~~~~~~~

Heineken Oud Bruin – Amsterdam, Netherlands

I don’t know why, but we felt the need to drink Heineken beer in Amsterdam. It’s not that the beer tastes any different when consumed in its home country (in most cases), it just felt like the right thing to do. Though I’m not typically a fan of Heineken, I had to try this Oud Bruin that was being served at a lively pub near our boutique hotel in the heart of Old Amsterdam.

The beer verdict – Nice dark colour but light body and carbonation, sweet and slightly bitter, not my favourite but I’d order a second. We give it 7 out of 10

~~~~~~~~
Sol Beer, Mexico
Sol Cerveza – Tulum, Mexico
This refreshing bottle of cerveza was enjoyed on the private deck of our fantastic beachfront villa after exploring the ruins of Tulum. With unobstructed views of the sparkling Caribbean Sea, its no surprise that this unforgettable moment made the list. When we think of tropical paradise, images of bright sunshine, turquoise water and cold beer come to mind. This moment had it all!
The beer verdict – Light and refreshing, plenty of carbonation, limited falvour. We give it 7 out of 10
~~~~~~~~

Klang Beer – Siem Reap, Cambodia

After a full day of exploring the Temples of Angkor, we spent the evening wandering around the central market of Siem Reap. In search of Cambodian beer that was not Angkor Beer, we managed to find a few cans of Klang Beer hidden in the back of a convenience store fridge. It was the first time we had seen the interesting brand of beer, leading us to believe it wasn’t a Cambodian bestseller. After our first sip we understood why – it’s not good.

The beer verdict – Light and tangy, malty with a strong alcohol aftertaste. We give it 5 out of 10

~~~~~~~~
Monteith’s Original Ale – Lake Taupo, New Zealand
This case of Monteith’s was one of the most memorable from our campervan road trip from Auckland to Queenstown. We watched the sunset over the lake and enjoyed of few beers, surrounded by New Zealand’s natural beauty. There’s something about drinking a cold beer in the fresh outdoors that just feels right.
The beer verdict – Light ale with good balance of hops, malt and sweetness. We give it 7.5 out of 10
~~~~~~~~

Ottakringer Helles Beer – Vienna, Austria

As we wandered around historical Vienna snapping photos of its stunning architecture, we found this carnival-like market in front of Vienna’s towering City Hall. It didn’t take long for the intoxicating smells of grilled sausage, sauerkraut and sauteed bacon potatoes to lure us into the market for an evening of cheerful festivities. If there’s one thing Austrians do right, it’s grilled sausages and beer!

The beer verdict – Smooth and malty, light colour but good body. It’s the perfect companion to spicy mustard and grilled sausages. We give it 8 out of 10

~~~~~~~~
I don’t know about you, but all of these photos of beer have suddenly made me thirsty. It must be beer-o-clock somewhere?!
