How to visit Amsterdam without falling victim to a tourist trap

The Netherlands is one of the safest countries in Europe. That is why, when visiting Amsterdam, tourists have no reason to worry about robberies and other troubles. The Red Light District and coffee shops might sound like a strange concept to some, but believe it or not, strict measures are put in place to maintain order and limit crime.

However, no matter how safe Amsterdam is, it doesn’t change the fact that many tourists fall victim to annoying tourist traps and petty theft.

Here are some travel tips for visiting Amsterdam

  • Conceal your Cameras and Maps
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that your camera is hanging around your neck, so be vigilant and remember that it makes you stand out and look like an easy target. If you’re wandering the streets of Amsterdam and want someone to take your picture in front of the Rembrandt Museum, make sure you carefully choose the photographer. There is no need to be extra paranoid, but be careful as there are stories of cameras getting stolen this way. Same rules apply for viewing maps in public; be selective when asking for directions and be cautious of those that are “overly helpful”.
  • Beware of Money Exchanges
Even though most money exchange shops in Amsterdam are trustworthy, you never know who will try to trick you. If you come across an exchange shop and it doesn’t have currency rate information posted, move on to the next one. There are always some wise guys that open shops specifically to rip off tourists. To get the best rate and most professional service, exchange your money at either the airport, the bank, GWK or the central train station.
  • Stay Alert in the Red Light District
Although the Red Light District is a popular tourist attraction in Amsterdam, it’s not the best area to explore at night. The Red Light District is ‘the colorful part of town’, where locals and tourists find half naked women standing behind windows offering their services (prostitution is a legal profession in the Netherlands). After the initial novelty fades, tourists quickly realize this area isn’t exactly the place to have a nice family dinner. Unfortunately, many drug dealers spend their time there, looking for drunken tourists to take advantage of and make a quick dollar. Best to visit the during the day when the streets are busy.
  • Save Your Money, Skip the Damrak
The Damrak is the main street that stretches between Amsterdam central station and the famous Dam Square. Every day, hundreds of tourists pass the Damrak and think they have reached the city center. The reality is that this bustling street is probably the worst area in Amsterdam for tourist traps. The restaurants and retail stores are overpriced and coffee shops are much more expensive, sadly not because of superior quality. Do yourself a favor, skip the Damrak and head to the Dam Square instead.

Like every metropolitan city, there will always be sketchy people looking to take advantage of unsuspecting tourists. To prevent yourself from being mistreated or overcharged, make sure to do your research ahead of time. Use common sense, be aware of your surroundings and try not to stand out.

Interesting Border Crossing from Nepal to India

Border Crossing from Nepal to India

After chasing rhinos on the back of an elephant in Nepal’s Chitwan National Park, our plan was to find transportation from Nepal to India. We were eager to experience the holy city of Varanasi and its ancient Ghats that rest on the shores of the sacred Ganges River.

We quickly learned that it would be a confusing task that required patience, having spent an entire day and night taking various methods of transportation, including two taxis, three rickshaws, three buses and an overnight train.

This photo was taken at Sunauli, the India-Nepal border crossing located north of Gorakhpur in eastern India. After crossing into India from Nepal without so much as a “hello”, we continued down the dusty road until we found a small, open-aired retail storefront with an inconspicuous sign that read “Immigration”. It was not the establishment one would expect to find when looking for a government building – but that’s the charm of India.

We entered the room and approached the lone wooden table, greeted by a friendly man wearing a dated USA Olympic tracksuit from the 80′s. He was helpful, stamping our passports and pointing us in the right direction to find the bus from Sunauli to Gorakhpur. It was a fairly simple process because we had already secured our visas ahead of time, though most people just wandered across the border without being questioned by anyone.

While inside the seemingly makeshift “Immigration Office”, I turned around and snapped this photo. It does a good job showcasing the rural nature of this puzzling border crossing.

Whitewater Rafting In The Philippines

P1240465 300x225 The Best Whitewater Rafting In The Philippines

The Philippines is best known for its many islands and beaches. Not many people consider the inland areas like the lush mountain regions, full of rainforest trees and rivers that meander down the valleys. Some of the bigger islands of the Philippines have rainforests that are as rich and diverse as those in Borneo, and have rivers that flow rapidly down the valleys. If you’re one of those adrenaline junkies or even if you just want to have some adventure, you have to try white water rafting in the Philippines.

I grew up in a city where the river cuts through the middle, and was a vital part of the founding of the city by the Spaniards in the 1600s. For years, Cagayan de Oro City was just a main commercial hub in the northern part of Mindanao, and the Cagayan river was overlooked as just a river that formed part of the city’s feature. Until a few years ago, when whitewater rafting adventures have been introduced to harness the big rapids of the Cagayan river.

Cagayan de Oro Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafting on the Cagayan river is one of the latest tourist attractions in the Philippines. Since its small beginnings, whitewater rafting business has grown and inspired more people to look at other adventure sports or activities to be setup around Cagayan de Oro. It has transformed an otherwise-sterile business hub/city of Cagayan de Oro into an adventure capital of the Philippines. Soon thereafter, ziplines over the forest canopy and gorges have been setup, and a dirt bike track has opened in the nearby town in Bukidnon.

Taking that exhilarating trip down the Cagayan river is something that a tourist to the Philippines must now consider. It’s a refreshing change of scene to the usual white sand beaches on the many islands around the country. I’ve only been on a couple other whitewater rafting trip in other parts of the world, and I can say that this is by far the best and most exciting whitewater rafting trip I’ve ever done! There are more rapids on the Cagayan river and it caters to various levels of confidence of people. The river also offers a great scenery of the lush green tropical rainforest, and the gorge that surrounds parts of the river. There’s also some interesting wildlife along the river.

Cagayan de Oro River

Several companies now operate guided trips for whitewater rafting in Cagayan de Oro. The famous one is called Kagay Whitewater Rafting. They have the best rafting equipment and well trained guides who are very familiar with the river. The trip generally starts from the centre of town in Divisoria, where Kagay has its own jeepney loaded with the rafts at the top of the vehicle. From the city, it is a 45 minute journey to the start of the rapids.

There are 2 options with the rafting trip: a beginner option and an advanced option. The beginner option involves going through 14 rapids, and offers a taster of the river rafting experience without the massive current. This is suitable for those who are not very confident but just wants to sample or experience whitewater rafting. The advanced option covers all the 21 navigable rapids, with the first 7 being the biggest rapids on the course.

Whitewater Rafting in Cagayan de Oro is an absolutely exhilarating experience, and one that must not be missed if you ever head down to the Philippines. Getting to Cagayan de Oro is easy, with many domestic flights available from Manila, Cebu and Davao. A range of airlines fly into Manila and Cebu from various international destinations, and from there, you can take a domestic flight to Cagayan de Oro.

Hope you have a Fabulous Journey to Cagayan de Oro, the City of Golden Friendship!
